Mysore Style Classes at Florence Yoga
Mysore (pronounced "my - sor") is a city in the south of India where Ashtanga yoga has been taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and the Jois family for almost 80 years.
Mysore style Ashtanga yoga is intimate, traditional and authentic Ashtanga yoga as it has been taught, direct from teacher to student, in India for generations. The teacher works quietly and directly with you, when and as you need him or her. It is radically and beautifully different from Western-style led yoga classes.
In the West, people are accustomed to being shown through a lot of postures in "led" yoga classes. This is actually a very advanced way of learning yoga - some postures being taught may be inappropriate for certain students, increasing the risk of both injury and discouragement. The advantage of the Mysore-style format is that it is for everyone. Although the whole group of practitioners is working together in community practice, the class is not led as a group: each individual does their yoga practice at their own level and pace, guided by their own breath. However, you are not working alone in your practice. The teacher is fully present for you to assist you on your path as much as you need him or her.
Mysore is suitable for ALL levels of practice - beginners to more seasoned folks. It is also the best way for a beginner to learn the practice. You can be brand new, and you don't have to know the sequence. You will learn it gradually with the teacher's support. The teacher is there to guide you whenever you need it.
And, it's not a two hour class, either. Your practice may be as short at 30 minutes if you are a Beginner, or if that's all you have time for. Once you memorize the initial postures of the practice, you can come any time during the class at your convenience, as long as your practice is done by the end time posted on our schedule (9-11 am Mondays through Thursdays, 6-7:30 pm on Wednesdays, and 8-9:45 am on Saturdays). The teacher is present throughout these two hours - to share how to do the each posture and to assist each student physically and verbally as needed.
Mysore is your chance to deepen your practice, to work one-on-one with the teacher, and to develop and memorize a self-practice. Your practice will expand and grow in the Mysore room, in ways that are not possible in led classes. Mysore class beautifully illustrates how we are all connected, and all on the same path, working together - no matter what level of practice we have.
Florence Yoga is the only yoga studio in the Valley that offers Mysore style teaching.
