_Mysore - Level 1-3
60-90+ minutes, depending on your experience. The simplest, most effective and traditional way of learning Ashtanga. Students are instructed individually and taught the sequence of postures a bit at a time. When the initial postures are memorized - which doesn’t take long - the teacher introduces more postures as the student is ready for them. The sequence is increased each day according to the student’s capacity. Regular, consistent practice is recommended. The teacher is available to all students to answer questions and to help with poses. Beginners to advanced students practice together, supporting each other through breath and group effort, guided overall by the teacher. We highly recommend that those new to Ashtanga start with Mysore classes. New students without a regular Ashtanga practice should commit to at least one month, at least three times per week, to best integrate the practice. Beginners practice will be about 30-45 minutes at first. If you are new, you will be asked to observe others first to help your understanding of the Ashtanga practice. The pace of the practice is decided by your own breathing pattern. Practice will increase gradually to about 90 minutes. Those brand new to Ashtanga, or just new to Mysore, should arrive a bit before the class start times on our schedule. Once familiar with the initial postures, students may arrive at their convenience. All students should be done with their practice by 11 am Mon-Fri, 7:30 pm Wednesday, and 9:45 am Saturday. We know that the Mysore classroom can be confusing or intimidating at first - that’s why we highly recommend and welcome you to come and observe a Mysore class for FREE to see what it’s all about, any time! Click here for more details on Mysore. Beginners - Level 1-2 80 Minutes. Our led Beginners classes are for those who are new to Ashtanga or new to Yoga. We instruct the group as a whole, going over the fundamentals of Ashtanga yoga practice. The classes are slower paced than our Led classes, and, depending on the class, will include practical instruction on posture practice, basic breath work, meditation, and some yoga philosophy. Alignment principles described, modifications provided, and questions answered. Generally, half of Primary series is taught. As in Mysore class, the emphasis is on integration of breath and learning the sequence of postures, plus developing understanding of the underlying elements of the practice. Led Classes - Level 2-3, note level designations on our schedule at right. 90 Minutes Our Led Classes are for folks of all levels who are familiar with Ashtanga. Everyone in the group practices together at the same pace, with each pose and each breath being by led by the teacher. These classes are not recommended for those new to Ashtanga (we suggest Mysore or our Beginners led classes in that case). The class will be led through most or sometimes all of the Primary series; occasionally, we will teach a portion of the Second or Intermediate Series. All Levels classes are good for those who want a more challenging led class than our led Beginners classes, and for those who want to develop the discipline of following the breath count of the Ashtanga practice, under the guidance of the teacher, throughout the entire class. |
