We are very excited to welcome Michelle's beloved teacher, Christine Hoar, back to Florence Yoga this April 2012!
Christine's workshops are inspiring, compassionate, and balanced. Christine works deeply on the Asana practice, but also includes discussion on Ayurveda, Yoga philosophy and the change that all practices bring to our lives.
As Yoga and Ayurveda are inextricably linked, this workshop includes time devoted to the study of each. Yoga and Ayurveda, as sister sciences, address the needs of the body, mind and spirit. Yoga is the science of Self realization and is primarily related to Spirit. Ayurveda, the science of life and longevity, primarily addresses the needs and functioning of the body and mind to enable them to harmonise with Spirit. Thus, the foundation of Yoga should be Ayurveda. It helps us to realize who we are so that we may enjoy the world fully. Its daily and seasonal routines, dietary guidance, therapeutics and antidotes for imbalances can help to keep us healthy and joyful well into our advanced years.
On Friday, for this who are familiar with the Mysore style of Ashtanga practice, Christine will hold a special Mysore class from 6-8 pm.
On Saturday, we will explore alignment, breath, precision in the Vinyasa method, and energetic movement or stagnation using the postures in Primary Series as a springboard. Within this context, Christine aims to give students a working knowledge of the practice of Ashtanga Yoga, particularly as we evolve with it over many years of practice. She will provide modifications to accommodate individual bodies and needs.
After a short break, Christine will share information on diet and nutrition from an Ayurvedic perspective in the afternoon. This introductory session will focus on basic principles of Ayurveda, the ancient science of self-healing, and how they can support your health and well-being. We will discuss our relationship to nature and the elements, with the goal of creating a platform from which we can understand our existence and health from a conscious perspective. We will touch upon daily routine, practices, and diet.
On Sunday, Christine will lead practitioners through an introduction to the Second Series of Ashtanga Yoga, otherwise known as Nadi Shodhana or Nerve Purification. This series of fun but challenging back bends, twists and arm balances is designed to open and strengthen the central channel of the body - the spine. Of course, Christine will provide modifications to accommodate individual bodies and needs.
After the morning session, we will journey (via carpool if desired) to Michelle's home in Chesterfield, MA for a very special Ayurvedic Cooking class. Traditionally Ayurveda heals with a combination of foods and herbs prepared and cooked for the season. This class will addresses our need for a strong digestive fire (Agni) to enable proper assimilation of foods and elimination of waste products. We will use a wide variety of spices and herbs and other ingredients with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients, local farms, and doshic balance. We will taste, touch, see, and smell all the goodness that goes into cooking. We will cook several dishes to please the all of the senses, and then share the meal that we create together!
We highly recommend that participants attend BOTH Saturday and Sunday's workshops.
The cost for the Saturday and Sunday workshops is $160 - both morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
The cost for the Friday evening Mysore class is just $25.
